Discover Sturgeon Bay... Again! As the first settlers to Door County planted roots, they chose the Sturgeon Bay area as its county seat. All areas of the peninsula, from Washington Island in the north to Brussels in the south, converged in the city to conduct official business which has left the city with a taste of all parts of the county. With galleries, museums, and performing arts, Sturgeon Bay is the cultural center of the Door Peninsula. Many galleries and museums are open year-round for visitors to enjoy during quiet seasons as well as the traditional summer vacation time, making Sturgeon Bay the perfect destination for visitors from the beginning of January to the end of December. As the County seat, Sturgeon Bay has always been the hub of the peninsula’s activities. And it doesn’t take much coaxing for the city to divulge it’s rich cultural heritage. Look around Sturgeon Bay. You’ll see two thriving shipyards, historic architecture in the downtown area, and a bustling farmers’ market during the summer and autumn months. When times have changed, the city has been careful to preserve its background. Tour the Maritime Museum on the city’s West Side for a peek into the area’s salty past. Or enjoy the recently-renovated Historic Museum on Fourth Avenue. But there is more to Sturgeon Bay than interesting buildings. Notably, community-based theater projects, bands, orchestras and choirs add flavor to the city. Other special events held during the year shine the spotlight on the area’s Scandinavian and Belgian background. A school for the arts is also featured in Sturgeon Bay, giving dance instruction and music lessons. Sometimes, we need to remember what the rules of life really are:
